Finding Your Personal Style | By Lori Rochau, Knilans' Interior Designer

We all have a personal style. But what story does yours tell? And does it really tell your story? As an interior designer, my job isn’t to tell you what looks good. It’s to help you discover the style that best suits your life, space, and taste. In this blog post, I’ll help you define your personal style!

There are many types of design style. You may have heard the terms “Arts & Crafts,” “Traditional,” “Cottagey,” etc. The list is endless. But how do you know what you are?

You may begin by taking a look around your own home and zeroing in on things you already own that you love. What are your favorite pieces, and how would you describe their style? Then, look outside your home for inspiration. Magazines and the internet (at Knilans’, we love Houzz.com) can be helpful in further identifying your style. Are you drawn to crisp clean lines, do you love distressed, time-worn character, or are you attracted to elegant and polished looks?

It’s important to keep in mind that style is ever-evolving. Even if you’re “Traditional,” 2020 traditional doesn’t look like what we did in the 80’s or 90’s. And it’s okay to change your style… Maybe just don’t try to do it all in one room!

You may consider yourself eclectic, and most of us are a bit anyway. There should be some items in your home that tell a story, whether it’s Grandma’s dresser or the piece you found at a Flea Market when you first set up a home and it’s been everywhere with you. Style isn’t just about the look of a place, but the feeling of it, and your story is what makes a style your own.

When it comes to re-designing a space, getting started can be overwhelming. The Knilans’ design team is happy to help you through this process! We specialize in helping you refine your sense of style, and integrate it into every detail of your room. From layout, to furnishing, to finishing touches, a Knilans’ pro can help bring your personal style into your home!
