Decorating for Fall: Tips from Knilans' Interior Designers

With the weather getting chilly and everyone spending more time indoors, our design team has been hard at work adding fall decor to their own homes. They’ve shared some photos and tips that will help you add a hint of autumn to your home this year.

The Best Fall Home Decor

There’s no one answer - the best fall home decor is what fits well with your current style! Adding a hint of autumn to your home can come in many different forms. Warm colors like red and orange, textures like dried plants or pheasant feathers, and harvest shapes like pumpkins and leaves all add that fall feeling. You can choose whatever elements match your current design for fall decor that complements your home perfectly.

Fall Decorating Ideas

Decorating isn’t a one-room or one-place process. You can add hints of autumn all around your home with these great fall decorating ideas.

Autumn Wreaths

Autumn wreaths are a versatile way to bring that fall feeling into your home! Greet guests at the door with a wreath, or layer it over existing pieces indoors. Brightly colored leaves, late-summer and early-fall flowers, and dried plants are all great options - mix and match them to complement your home’s design!

Centerpieces for Fall

Centerpieces are a classic way to bring style to your home. Experiment with color, arrangement, and texture to find something that suits you. A large centerpiece on a dining room table will wow guests, but don’t be afraid to include coffee tables, consoles, and mantles to add a little polish all around your home.

Fall Florals

Autumn floral arrangements add an elegant touch anywhere you need it! Silk or fresh flowers in warm golds, oranges, and reds are always a great fit. Or, try using dried flowers, stems, and branches to add earthy texture to your arrangements. Don’t forget the garden! Mums are hardy plants that bloom late into the year, making them a great outdoor addition to your fall decor.

Halloween Decorations

While we’ve just taken down our Halloween decor, here are a few ideas for next year’s spooky celebrations. More general pieces, like uncarved pumpkins, can be used all season as part of a harvest motif. If you plan ahead, you can choose Halloween pieces that complement the rest of your fall decor, making them easy to add and remove when autumn rolls around. Or, choose a few particularly unique pieces, and create a space to show them off.

How to Choose Fall Decorations

When shopping, it’s easy to snap up anything that looks cute or - even better - is on sale! Especially during season’s end clearance events, the temptation to buy anything attractive and affordable is real. However, you’ll likely end up with heaps of mismatched decorations and no real plan for how to display them. Instead, this year, take a walk through your home. Think about the color schemes of each room, the areas where you could display decorations, and how you want your home to feel. Choose a few colors, textures, and motifs you really love, and keep your eyes open for pieces that fit your needs, instead of impulse buying!

If you’d like a professional opinion, the Knilans’ design team is here to help. Our team of professional interior designers is happy to hear more about your style and home, and help you find pieces that you’ll love this fall, and every year after.
